Not that this alternate universe is fantasy, just that it is a world far removed from the one with which I am most familiar. And that's what is most appealing about this fine author, his ability to paint a picture of a world/culture of which we have no first hand knowledge. This is the 3rd book I've read by Ha Jin. All portray characters and situations in a non-judgmental way. He does not insult the reader by telling us what to think about his portraits of a different time, a different people. And when I finish his books, I do not judge either, just stand back appreciative of the opportunity to have met some simple but most interesting individuals.

Well written but a little slow for my taste
Probably better in Chinese language but pretty good
Not knowing much about China and its culture, I'm glad that my book club chose this novel to read. It was enlightening and comical. 4 stars.
I'm Chinese and my parents had childhood experiences of the book talks about. However, as a novel, I don't think it as good as the other books with rewards. His style may be considered simple and unique in the US, but I can tell, from the perspective if a Chinese, it's just because he is not very good at English writing, not that he intended to create the style. So after reading it for a while, it kinda of feel boring and plain. There ARE a lot Chinese writers have done novels with similar stories but way more better plots and words.
A fine tale of growth and alternating happiness with unhappiness, set in rural China. Beautiful and lyrical prose.
I rather liked this book. Its authenticity of China is without doubt. The outline of the story is simple. The content is easy to read. Not a very elegant story though, very plain, close to life. The ending is somehow abrupt, not what I expected. I thought this is going to be dramatic. But no. It ended in a very sarcastic and comedic--in a way--scene.
I will recommended Ha Jin to you all. He is good in writing. Imagine yourself writing a novel in French or Spanish, you'll respect him too.
Ha Jin takes you through life in Communist China in a unique way. Jin causes the reader to pity and, for a moment or two, dislike Shao Bin. We also recognize our own weak character flaws in Young Shao, the gifted artisan with a stiff disposition, someone who is abused, an individual who creates some of his own misery.

I felt that Young Shao's problems were resolved too quickly at the end. After following his sorted plight throughout the book, I was left wanting more at the end. See if you agree.

Jin crafts the English language with great beauty. His style shows great discipline. Jin is always an interesting read.
